There are tons of social media marketing campaigns going on lately. Some of them are awesome, others are just... lame.
Here's one that caught my eye in a positive way:
Moonfruit recently started a campaign on Twitter to celebrate their 10th birthday (and, no doubt, to get attention from a large audience). For 10 days, they are giving away one MacBook Pro each day. The way to enter into the drawing is by posting something on Twitter - anything, as long as it contains the hashtag #moonfruit. Within the first day, #moonfruit was in the Trending Topics on Twitter. Millions of people saw Moonfruit as a trending topic and got interested in them.
Why is it successful? (My opinion)
-They are using a medium (Twitter) where word spreads very quickly.
-By giving away a MacBook Pro, which is considered to be quite a "cool" brand, they are being associated with Apple/MacBooks, which automatically makes them appear cool - at least in my mind.
-Participating is simple. Anyone with a Twitter account can participate within seconds.
-Anyone who participates spreads the word even more.
-They're communicating that this should be a fun contest, asking people to be creative when using the #moonfruit hashtag. People are aware that their followers don't want to read a bunch of boring tweets, so they really are trying to be creative, so as to not lose followers.
-To increase the creative and fun aspect of the campaign, Moonfruit have announced that they'll be giving away an iPod Touch as a "creative response award".
What remains to be seen, in my opinion, is whether the campaign also results in an increase in sales for Moonfruit. The audience they are reaching with Twitter is very broad. But it's certainly increasing awareness of their brand.
